Do you ever feel like your energy is on a roller coaster? Maybe you feel great after breakfast, but by 10:00 AM, you are reaching for another cup of coffee or a sugary snack. Perhaps you feel “hangry” or shaky if you miss a meal. These feelings are often signs that your blood sugar is spiking and crashing.
As a Metabolic Health Coach, I see this every day. Many of my clients come to me feeling tired and frustrated. They want to feel steady, strong, and clear-headed. The good news is that one simple change can make a massive difference. That change is choosing the right protein.
Protein is more than just a muscle builder. It is a powerful tool for Blood Sugar Balance and Sustainable Weight Loss. When you understand how to use protein, you take back control of your health.
What is Metabolic Health?
You might hear the term “metabolism” and think of how fast you burn calories. While that is part of it, metabolic health is much deeper. It is about how well your body creates and uses energy. When your metabolism is healthy, your body can easily switch between burning sugar and burning fat for fuel.
When your metabolic health is out of balance, your body struggles. This can lead to inflammation, weight gain around the middle, and constant cravings. My 6-month Health and Wellness Transformation Program focuses on these root causes. We look at why your body is struggling so we can find a lasting solution.
The Secret Power of Protein
Think of protein as a “brake” for your digestion. When you eat carbohydrates, your body turns them into sugar very quickly. This causes your blood sugar to rise fast. If it rises too fast, your body releases a hormone called insulin to bring it back down. This often leads to a “crash” that leaves you feeling tired and hungry again.
When you add protein to your meal, it slows down this whole process. It takes your body longer to break down protein. This means the sugar from your meal enters your blood slowly and steadily. This is the key to Functional Nutrition. It is about using food to help your body function at its best.

Choosing High-Quality Protein
In my Detox Your Life Program, we talk a lot about quality. Not all protein is created equal. Some choices can actually cause more inflammation in your body. This makes it harder to reach your health goals.
When you choose animal proteins, try to look for these labels:
- Grass-fed and finished: This means the animals ate what they were meant to eat. This meat has more healthy fats and fewer toxins.
- Pasture-raised: This is especially important for eggs and poultry. These birds live outside and eat a natural diet.
- Wild-caught: When choosing fish, wild-caught is usually better than farmed. It contains more minerals and fewer chemicals.
If you prefer plant-based proteins, quality still matters. Look for organic options to avoid pesticides. Pesticides can disrupt your hormones and hurt your metabolic health.
Plant-Based vs. Animal-Based Protein
I am often asked which is better. The truth is that it depends on your unique body. Both can be wonderful for your health.
Animal Protein
Animal proteins like eggs, chicken, and fish are “complete.” This means they have all the amino acids your body needs in one place. They are very easy for your body to use. For many people, animal protein is the easiest way to reach their daily goals.
Plant Protein
Plant proteins like lentils, beans, and seeds are also great. They come with a bonus: fiber. Fiber is another essential tool for Blood Sugar Balance. It helps your gut health and keeps you feeling full. However, many plant proteins are not “complete.” You need to eat a variety of them throughout the day to get everything your body needs.
If you find that beans or lentils make you feel bloated, your digestion might need some extra love. My 30-day Renew Your Digestion Program can help you heal your gut so you can enjoy these healthy foods without discomfort.

The 20-30 Gram Rule
How much protein do you actually need? For most people, a good goal is to get 20 to 30 grams of protein at every meal. This amount is enough to signal to your brain that you are full. It also helps protect your muscles, which is vital for a strong metabolism.
You do not need a scale to figure this out. Here is a simple way to eyeball it:
- A piece of meat or fish the size of your palm is about 25 grams.
- Three large eggs provide about 18 to 21 grams.
- One cup of cooked lentils has about 18 grams.
- A cup of Greek yogurt usually has 15 to 20 grams.
Try to include a protein source every time you eat. This includes your snacks! Instead of just having an apple, have an apple with some almond butter or a few walnuts. This small change prevents the sugar in the fruit from spiking your blood sugar.
Building Your Metabolic Plate
Choosing the best protein is the first step. The second step is how you pair it. I teach my clients a simple formula for every meal:
Protein + Healthy Fat + Fiber.
When you combine these three, you create a powerhouse for your health. The protein protects your muscles. The healthy fat supports your brain and hormones. The fiber from vegetables keeps your digestion moving.
Imagine a dinner of wild-caught salmon (protein), half an avocado (fat), and a large pile of roasted broccoli (fiber). This meal will keep your energy steady for hours. You won’t find yourself searching the pantry for chocolate an hour later. This is how you achieve Sustainable Weight Loss without feeling deprived.

Why This Matters for Your Future
Improving your metabolic health is about more than just fitting into your favorite jeans. It is about how you show up for your life. When your blood sugar is balanced, you have more patience. You have more focus at work. You have more energy to play with your children or grandchildren.
I know it can feel overwhelming to change your habits. That is why I am here to support you. We don’t aim for perfection. We aim for progress. Every time you choose a high-quality protein, you are casting a vote for your health.
A Note on Personalization
Everyone’s journey is different. Some people feel amazing on a higher-protein diet. Others need more healthy fats or complex carbs. This is the heart of my work as a coach. I help you listen to your body’s signals so you can give it exactly what it needs.
If you are ready to stop guessing and start feeling your best, I would love to chat. You can book a discovery call with me to see how we can work together. We will look at your history, your goals, and your lifestyle to create a plan that actually works for you.

Coach’s Insight
When I was struggling with my own health, I thought I was doing everything “right.” I was eating lots of salads and fruit. But I was constantly tired and bloated. It wasn’t until I focused on high-quality protein and gut health that everything changed. I realized that my body was starving for the right building blocks. Once I started giving it what it needed, the brain fog lifted and my energy returned. You deserve to feel that way too. Start today by adding one palm-sized portion of clean protein to your next meal. Your body will thank you!
